Google upgraded NotebookLM on June 8, 2026, with new agentic research and analysis capabilities. The product was subsequently renamed Gemini Notebook on July 16, but its central purpose remains the same: helping users understand complex subjects through information they choose and trust.
The June update represents an important change in scope. Earlier versions were most useful after users had already assembled a collection of documents, webpages, videos or other sources. They could ask questions, generate summaries and trace answers back to the original material.
The upgraded Gemini Notebook research experience can participate in more of the process. It can help find sources, write and execute code, analyze structured information and create outputs such as charts, spreadsheets, reports and presentations. Instead of functioning mainly as a conversational layer over documents, it is becoming an active workspace for conducting research.
From Answering Sources to Advancing a Research Project
Gemini Notebook’s original strength was source-grounded question answering. Users supplied the material, and the system generated responses supported by citations pointing back to those sources.
That foundation remains important. Google continues to position the product as a research and thinking partner whose answers are grounded in a notebook’s selected material rather than based only on a general-purpose model’s internal knowledge.
The agentic upgrade adds a broader workflow around that foundation. A user can now begin with an incomplete question or loosely defined idea. Gemini Notebook can help identify useful areas of investigation, search the web for relevant material and organize selected sources into a more structured research collection.
The user still decides which discovered sources should be added. This preserves a significant distinction between finding material and accepting it as evidence. Gemini Notebook can recommend sources, but it does not automatically make every result part of the notebook’s trusted knowledge base.
This changes the starting point for research. Previously, users often needed to understand the topic well enough to assemble the right material before NotebookLM became useful. The upgraded system can assist earlier, when the central questions, evidence and structure are still being developed.
A Secure Cloud Computer Adds Data Analysis
One of the most consequential additions is a secure cloud computer attached to each eligible notebook.
Powered by Gemini 3.5 and Google’s Antigravity agent infrastructure, this environment allows Gemini Notebook to write and execute code as part of a research task. Google says the system includes more than 100 curated software skills that can support data analysis, document processing and the creation of research outputs.
This capability matters because many research problems cannot be solved through summarization alone. A collection of reports may contain tables that use different formats. Survey responses may need to be cleaned and grouped. Financial data may require calculations before its meaning becomes clear.
Gemini Notebook can potentially use code to standardize information, compare datasets, calculate results and turn findings into charts. A researcher could combine statistics from several countries, resolve formatting differences and create visualizations based on the cleaned data. A small business could compare advertising expenditure with sales information and calculate the financial performance of a campaign.
The cloud computer moves the product closer to analytical software. It does not merely explain what a spreadsheet contains; it can use computation to investigate the information.
Code execution still requires supervision. A calculation may use the wrong assumption, interpret a column incorrectly or produce a technically valid answer that does not fit the research question. Generated analyses should therefore be reviewed rather than treated as automatically reliable.
Research Can End in a Finished Deliverable
The upgrade also expands the types of material Gemini Notebook can produce.
Users can request customized PDF reports, Microsoft Word documents, Markdown files, charts, images, structured data, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. Outputs can include information drawn from notebook sources as well as analysis performed through the secure computing environment.
This creates a more continuous digital workflow. A user can move from collecting evidence to analyzing it and then presenting the findings without manually transferring every result into separate applications.
A program manager could turn technical specifications into a simplified guide, presentation and implementation roadmap. A data analyst could produce charts and a formal report from several datasets. A teacher might generate a worksheet based on selected course material, while a student could organize research into a structured presentation.
Google also allows users to give more detailed instructions about the format and purpose of an output and to revise some generated materials after creation. The system is therefore being positioned not only as an analysis engine, but as a production environment for research-based deliverables.
Agentic Research Does Not Remove Source Grounding
The expansion creates an important tension. Gemini Notebook is becoming more autonomous, but its credibility still depends on maintaining clear relationships between claims and evidence.
Google says notebook responses continue to include citations showing where information came from. Users retain control over the material included in the notebook, even when the system uses Google Search to discover potential sources.
This is different from asking an ordinary chatbot to research a subject without seeing which documents informed its answer. The notebook remains a defined evidence environment, while agentic capabilities help build, analyze and transform that environment.
However, source grounding does not guarantee that a conclusion is correct. A notebook can contain incomplete, biased or outdated information. Two sources may contradict each other, while an AI-generated synthesis may overlook an important methodological difference.
The upgrade therefore strengthens the mechanics of research without replacing research judgment. Users still need to evaluate source quality, distinguish primary evidence from commentary and verify important conclusions.
The Rename Reflects a Wider Google Ecosystem
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. The company says it remains the same standalone product, with existing notebooks still available, but it is becoming more closely connected to the wider Gemini ecosystem.
Notebooks can appear inside the Gemini app, with sources, instructions and certain changes synchronized between the two experiences. Google has also announced plans to bring notebooks into AI Mode in Search.
The integration does not make the products identical. In the standalone Gemini Notebook experience, answers are grounded exclusively in notebook sources. When a notebook is used through the Gemini app, responses may also use web search and other Gemini tools.
Some Studio outputs—including Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, infographics and slide decks—also remain specific to the standalone notebook environment.
The rename therefore signals expansion rather than replacement. Gemini Notebook remains a specialized research tool, but its knowledge base is becoming accessible across more Google AI products.
Who Could Benefit From the Upgrade?
The new capabilities are particularly relevant to work involving many sources, complex documents or structured data.
Students can use Gemini Notebook to organize reading, compare evidence and develop research outputs, although academic rules may limit how generated analysis or writing can be submitted. Researchers and analysts can combine source review with calculations and visualizations. Managers may use it to turn technical or operational information into reports and presentations.
Entrepreneurs and small businesses could analyze market information, sales data or campaign performance without constructing every spreadsheet and chart manually. Educators may use the system to transform course materials into structured learning resources.
The greatest potential benefit is not simply faster summarization. It is the reduction of manual work between research stages: finding sources, organizing evidence, running calculations, creating visuals and preparing a final deliverable.
Availability and Current Limitations
The agentic chat and advanced reasoning capabilities began rolling out globally on the web to Google AI Ultra users and eligible Workspace business customers in June. Google later expanded access toward Google AI Pro subscribers, and its current help documentation lists agentic capabilities for eligible Pro and Ultra users. Availability can still vary by account, organization, region and administrative settings.
Google describes the new functions as experimental and in early development. Gemini Notebook may take unintended actions, make analytical mistakes or generate files that require correction. Users should review code-based calculations, factual claims, citations and finished outputs before relying on them.
The product’s effectiveness also depends on the quality of the task definition. A broad request can help initiate exploration, but complex research still benefits from a clear question, appropriate evidence and explicit standards for evaluating the result.
Gemini Notebook’s June upgrade changes the product from a tool that mainly responds to supplied sources into a more active research partner.
It can now help discover evidence, organize a research repository, run code, analyze data and transform findings into documents, charts, spreadsheets and presentations. These capabilities allow it to participate in a larger portion of the research process while preserving the source-grounded structure that originally distinguished NotebookLM.
The most important development is not that Gemini Notebook can produce more file formats. It is that evidence gathering, analysis and production are becoming connected within one environment.
For students and professionals, this could make complex research more manageable. Its value will still depend on careful source selection, human verification and a clear understanding that advanced AI analysis supports judgment rather than replacing it.
