Claude Cowork is expanding from a desktop-centered agent into a cross-device workspace. Anthropic announced on July 7, 2026, that Cowork was becoming available through the Claude web interface and mobile applications, allowing users to start a task on one device and continue managing it from another.
The most important change is not simply the addition of two interfaces. Cowork sessions can now run remotely on Anthropic’s servers, while session files and project context remain associated with the user’s Claude account. This means supported work can continue after a laptop is closed, and the same session can later be opened from desktop, web or mobile.
The expansion moves Cowork closer to a persistent AI workspace rather than a tool tied to one computer. Users can delegate a multi-stage assignment, leave the device on which it began and return through another surface to review progress, answer questions or redirect the work.
Cowork Is No Longer Tied to One Desktop Session
Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agentic work environment for tasks that require more than a single response. A user describes an objective, after which Claude can plan the work, divide it into subtasks, run code, use connected tools and produce finished files.
Previously, Cowork depended more heavily on the desktop application and the computer on which a session was running. The web and mobile expansion changes that relationship by moving the agent loop and code execution into remote cloud sessions.
In this mode, Claude performs its work on Anthropic-managed infrastructure rather than relying on the user’s computer for the main execution process. Closing a laptop does not automatically stop the task. Users can reopen the session through the Claude website, mobile app or desktop application and access the same conversation and files.
This continuity could be useful for research, document production, data analysis and other tasks that may take longer than an ordinary chat. A professional might start a report from a desktop computer, check its progress from a phone and review the completed files later through the web interface.
The interaction therefore becomes less dependent on keeping one device open and actively supervising every stage.
Remote Sessions Change Where the Work Happens
Anthropic describes remote Cowork execution as a beta capability. Each cloud session receives an isolated, temporary environment on Anthropic’s servers where the agent can run code and coordinate its work.
The Claude Cowork architecture overview states that these environments are separated from one another and do not have access to a user’s private network by default. Network activity passes through controlled infrastructure, while session-scoped credentials expire after a limited period.
Although the execution environment is temporary, the session itself is persistent from the user’s perspective. Its conversation, uploaded materials and generated files are saved to the Claude account, allowing the work to remain accessible across supported devices.
This distinction is important. Persistent files do not mean that one permanent virtual computer continues running indefinitely. Instead, Claude stores the session and its relevant materials so that the user can return to the work without rebuilding the context from the beginning.
For students and individual professionals, this could make longer assignments easier to manage across daily routines. For teams, it may help preserve project continuity when work is reviewed from different locations or devices.
Local Files Still Depend on Claude Desktop
Remote execution does not give the web or mobile applications unrestricted access to everything stored on a user’s computer.
Cloud sessions can work independently with files saved to the Claude account, supported connectors, plugins and web-accessible information. However, access to local folders, desktop applications and the user’s browser still passes through the Claude Desktop application.
When a remote session needs a file stored on the computer, the desktop app must be open and connected. Claude can reach only folders the user has explicitly connected and only within the permissions already granted. If the desktop application is closed, the Cowork session can continue running but cannot access those local resources.
This creates two practical categories of work.
A cloud-based task using uploaded files, account-saved materials and remote connectors can continue without a computer online. A task that depends on a local spreadsheet, a desktop application or browser activity needs the relevant computer and Claude Desktop to remain available.
The distinction prevents the web or mobile app from silently gaining complete access to a device. It also means users need to think carefully about where important project files are stored before starting a long-running session.
Cowork Can Be Started, Steered and Reviewed From Any Surface
Anthropic has placed Chat and Cowork within the same Claude home interface. Users can choose Cowork from the message area and describe the outcome they want Claude to complete.
Across desktop, web and mobile, supported users can start tasks, monitor progress, provide additional instructions and resume sessions created on another device. Connectors, skills, plugins, projects and previews of files created by Claude are also supported across the three surfaces.
The desktop application remains the fullest version of Cowork because it can connect remote execution with local files, browser access and computer use. Some capabilities also remain desktop-only. Live artifacts, for example, are not currently available through the web or mobile Cowork interfaces.
The cross-device model is nevertheless significant because supervision no longer needs to happen from the machine on which the task began. A manager could review Claude’s progress while away from a desk. A student could answer a clarification request from a phone. A creator could inspect a generated document on the web before returning to the desktop version for further revisions.
Cowork is therefore becoming a continuous work thread rather than a collection of isolated interactions.
Scheduled Tasks Can Run Without a Device Online
The remote architecture also changes how scheduled work operates.
Cowork can run recurring tasks such as preparing daily briefings, compiling weekly reports, monitoring selected information or generating team updates from connected services. Because these tasks execute remotely, they can run at their scheduled time even when the user’s computer is asleep or the desktop application is closed.
Scheduled tasks can use compatible connectors, plugins and files saved to the Claude account. They cannot independently reach local computer folders while the relevant desktop connection is unavailable.
This separation may make recurring AI productivity workflows more reliable. A scheduled report no longer depends entirely on whether a specific employee remembered to leave a computer running.
However, unattended automation also increases the importance of careful permissions. Low-risk tasks such as summarizing information are easier to delegate than workflows that modify files, send communications or change business records.
Greater Continuity Also Creates New Risks
Cowork can read files, browse the web, run code and take actions through connected tools. Anthropic warns that these capabilities create risks involving mistakes, excessive permissions and prompt-injection attacks.
Prompt injection can occur when Claude encounters malicious instructions hidden in an email, webpage or document while completing a legitimate task. Those instructions may attempt to redirect the agent or persuade it to perform an unintended action.
Anthropic’s Cowork safety guidance recommends limiting what Claude can access, reviewing write permissions carefully and maintaining human oversight for high-stakes workflows. The company distinguishes between read tools, which retrieve information, and write tools, which can create, modify or delete content.
Remote work makes these controls especially important because an agent may continue operating while the user is not watching. Persistent access should not be confused with unlimited autonomy.
For sensitive projects, organizations may need clear rules covering connected systems, approval requirements, data handling and which actions must always remain under human control.
Availability Is Expanding Gradually
Claude Cowork remains a paid feature. The desktop version is available across Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
As of August 5, 2026, Cowork on web and mobile is in beta for Max, Team and Enterprise users. Anthropic says access will expand to Pro plans over the following weeks, meaning some eligible users may not yet see the feature. Availability can also depend on organization settings and whether an administrator has enabled Cowork.
Users need the latest Claude mobile or desktop application to access the corresponding interface. Because the rollout is gradual, the exact set of available capabilities may differ between accounts.
Claude Cowork’s arrival on web and mobile is more than a convenience update. Remote sessions change Cowork from an agent that primarily operates through one desktop application into a workspace that can remain active across devices and over longer periods.
Sessions and files can follow the user through their Claude account, scheduled tasks can run without a computer online, and ongoing work can be monitored or redirected from desktop, web or mobile.
The main limitation is the boundary between cloud and local resources. Cowork can continue independently with account-based files and remote connections, but local folders, browser activity and desktop applications still require Claude Desktop to remain connected.
For productivity, the broader significance is continuity. AI agents are becoming less dependent on a single prompt, screen or work session. Their value increasingly lies in whether they can preserve context, continue useful work and remain controllable as users move between devices and responsibilities.
